Recognising stress in dogs

Learn to recognise subtle and obvious stress signals and what you can safely do first.

HEALTH✓ In-depth guide

What signs can indicate stress?

Panting without heat, looking away, lip licking, freezing, repeated shaking, restlessness and avoidance can be stress-related depending on context. Always consider the whole picture and changes from normal.

What helps first?

Increase distance from the trigger, reduce difficulty and allow recovery. Do not force interaction or training when your dog is clearly over threshold.

When should you seek help?

With sudden behaviour change, signs of pain, severe fear, aggression or persistent problems, assessment by a veterinarian and/or qualified behaviour professional is sensible.
